A secret kept from you, the hiring executive.
You may not know it, but your Admin often holds the key to how fast a search gets filled. S/he also frequently holds a key as to whom gets hired at all.
If you want a search to go well and fast, we find empowered admins are invaluable. They are empowered to look at everybody’s schedule, and make changes unilaterally if necessary. They are empowered to hound and hunt you down to get an answer (one admin had us hold while she pounded on the door to the Men’s restroom). Give them clear instructions, appropriate authority, and turn ‘em loose. Efficient and crucial work products will include:
- Candidates getting scheduled in a timely fashion.
- Distribution of documents to the right people at the right time.
- Graceful shuffling of the candidate from place to place.
- A complete schedule of times, locations, logistics, etc.
- A positive impression about the organization on the part of the candidate.
One savvy client even invited his admin into the search committee to ask the question: “While dealing with Mr. (Doe) the candidate, how did he treat you?” We were in the room when the question was asked. In one instance the admin paused and said, “I found him to be curt and rude.” Despite his national reputation in the field, the search committee decided to eliminate him as a bad cultural fit. They were probably right!
